Take a Ride through Cruz Bay

Who wishes they were in Cruz Bay right now? Well, this is the next best thing!

Yesterday was another beautiful day here in St. John, so I decided to put the GoPro on the Jeep and I recorded a little video for all of you. I started at Mongoose Junction and drove through town, ending over in Frank Bay. You can see a lot of changes in this video, including the ongoing construction at the ferry dock and the Wharfside Hotel, as well as beautiful water views, and more. I recorded this five-minute video in 4k. Enjoy!

Audacious Adventures with Alana

Meet my new friend Alana.

Hello everyone, and happy Wednesday! Who needs a little pick-me-up today?

I had the privilege of taking a precocious eight-year-old named Alana on an island tour last month. Alana and her parents were staying at the Westin for a few days after a quick little stay over at the Ritz on St. Thomas. While Alana’s parents took a dip in the ocean, Alana and I chatted on the beach and she told me about a YouTube Channel she created. The channel – Audacious Adventures with Alana – highlights her and her family’s travels around the country. She told me that she was creating a video about her trip to the US Virgin Islands, and I promised I would share it with all of you. 🙂

So please, if you have about four minutes today, check out this quick video that Alana created about her September vacation to St. John. The St. John portion of the video starts around one minute and 56 seconds.

Want to see more of Alana’s videos or simply want to make an eight-year-old smile? You can click the Subscribe button on her page. Click here to visit Alana’s YouTube Channel.

How Trunk Bay Got Its Name

The overlook at Trunk Bay

I get asked quite frequently on island tours the origin of the names of neighborhoods, beaches, bays, and the like here on St. John. Well, today I’d like to chat about arguably the most popular spot here on St. John – Trunk Bay.

According to the Virgin Islands National Park, Trunk Bay was named after the leatherback sea turtle. Apparently they used to nest there in large numbers back in the day. Now you’re probbaly thinking, what does a turtle have to do with a trunk? Well apparently leatherbacks, when on the ocean surface, look like a steamer trunk, according to the VINP, so the Danes and locals called them trunk turtles. Or so that’s how the legend goes…

Historical fact: Denmark (the Danes) controlled St. John from 1718 until 1917 when the United States purchased St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix for $25 million.

Unfortunately we do not see leatherbacks in our waters frequently these days. We mainly see Hawksbill and Green turtles. Last year, however, two leatherback sea turtles nests were found here on St. John, and one was found right in the middle of Trunk Bay beach! St. John photographer Steve Simonsen just happened to be strolling the beach with his wife Janet the morning it was found. He captured this beautiful photo below:

We’re currently in the midst of sea turtle nesting season here on St. John, I’ll have more on that soon. In the meantime, have a fantastic day everyone!

St. John Restaurants are Reopening!

Hello everyone, and happy Friday! I just wanted to write a quick post to let you know that the island is starting to open up again! Over the past week, numerous restaurants reopened following a quick off-season reprieve. Here is a quick rundown in no particular order…

  • Lime Out, the island’s ridiculously fun floating taco bar, reopened last weekend.
  • 1864 reopened its Raw Bar Happy Hour and dinner service earlier this week. They’re located in Mongoose Junction and are the sister restaurant of Extra Virgin Bistro. Extra Virgin remains closed for the off-season.
  • Quiet Mon, the laid-back Irish Pub in Cruz Bay, reopened yesterday.
  • The Terrace’s reopening date has been pushed back a bit. They are now scheduled to reopen Tuesday night. and I will be there!
  • Dave & Jerry’s, the island’s only steakhouse, reopened earlier this week too. They’re located beneath Cruz Bay Hotel.
  • Salty Mongoose, one of the island’s best pizza spots, reopened within the past week too.
  • Speaking 0f pizza, Ronnie’s and Lovango Rum Bar have both reopened following a quick break. I’ve had both recently, and both were great!
  • Morgan’s Mango is back open too. Reservations are also recommended for this top spot.
  • Woody’s and Rum Hut were expected to reopen by now, but remain closed. I will let you know when I see the doors open for both.

That’s it for now. It’s a great time to visit! So go ahead and start looking at those plane tickets!

Yesterday was an absolutely spectacular day here on St. John. I drove around most of the island and took lots of pictures to share with all of you. All of these images were snapped with my iPhone, and none have been altered. These colors are real, folks! Enjoy!

A Shift in the Housing Market?

For years, it has been near impossible to find a long-term rental here on St. John. Because of this, my family of three has been crammed into a one-bedroom for more than three years. (Not for long though – yahoo!) There are a few reasons behind the lack of housing over the past few years, but it mostly comes down to one thing – money. Property owners can make more money off of a vacation rental as opposed to a long-term rental. I can’t (and don’t) blame them for doing this, but it has been very problematic for people who live on St. John full time.

This, however, seems to be changing. Over the past few months, I have seen more and more long-term rentals available online. I am currently aware of at least five places that are available, which has been unheard of in recent years. The board at Connections – the spot where residents posts things for sale and/or rent – actually has places listed for rent. It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen this, and I have to admit, it’s quite refreshing to see.

So why the suddent shift? There are a lot of factors that are possibly in play. We saw a lot of our long-term units convert into AirBNBs or other types of short-term housing following the 2017 hurricanes and then again after Covid. It’s possible that some of these units are converting back now that the island’s number of visitors seems to be back to normal following an unprecedented boost in vacationers in 2021 and 2022. Another factor can be that people are leaving. Island life isn’t for everyone, as glamorous as it may seem.

Over the past month, we have had more power outages than I can count. Our grocery prices are high. Housing prices are high. And truthfully, there isn’t a ton to do, which can be a turnoff for some. Personally, I love hiking, snorkeling and spending time with friends at the beach. But that all can get old for some. So St. John tends to be a relatively transient spot where people come for a few years and then head back to the states.

I have several friends who are born and raised who are also getting priced out of St. John. It’s simply not realistic for a family to pay $2,500 and up for an apartment. We are an island whose economy relies on tourism, but tourism is to blame for the rise in living costs. It’s a double-edged sword.

When I rented my first apartment in Cruz Bay nearly 10 years ago, I paid $1,100 a month. An apartment in that building is now renting for close to $2,000 a month. All eight of the apartments in that building were long-term rentals when I moved here. Today, more than half of the units have been converted to vacation rentals. This has been our reality over the years.

Earlier this year, the only available rentals were brand new two-bedroom units located basically above a gas station. The price: a whopping $3,500 a month. Needless to say, they stayed empty for quite some time.

So many people on island have been commenting this year that St. John feels like it did pre-2017, pre-storms. We aren’t overwhelmed with guests. We actually are having an off-season this year. And now maybe, just maybe, our housing – the costs and availability – will go back to what it was pre-storm too. Only time will tell I guess!

I get asked quite often about what it’s like to live here on St. John, especially when I’m cruising the island during my Explore STJ Island Tours. So today, I figured I would provide a little more insight for all of you. I hope you enjoyed today’s Jenn Talk. 🙂
